Nicotine pouches are small portion bags containing nicotine in a filling without tobacco leaves. They are placed under the lip, where nicotine can pass through the lining of the mouth.
They are sometimes called “white snus” or “all white”. These informal terms can be confusing because traditional white portion snus can still contain tobacco.
Nicotine pouches, snus and nicotine-free pouches
| Category | Tobacco leaves | Nicotine |
|---|---|---|
| Nicotine pouches | No | Yes |
| Traditional tobacco snus | Yes | Yes |
| Pouches labelled nicotine free | Check ingredients | No |
Tobacco free and nicotine free describe different properties. The Public Health Agency of Sweden defines the category by the absence of tobacco and presence of nicotine for consumption.
What is inside?
Formulations vary. Common components include plant fibres, nicotine, water, flavourings, sweeteners and acidity regulators. The pouch material holds the filling together.
Check the exact ingredient list. A flavour name does not identify every ingredient, and a brand overview cannot replace information for a particular variant.
Nicotine can come from tobacco or be produced synthetically. A tobacco-free label does not establish its source.
What do the numbers mean?

Mg per pouch states the amount in one pouch. Mg/g states concentration per gram of filling. Converting requires the filling weight per pouch.
For example, 10 mg/g multiplied by 0.6 g gives 6 mg per pouch. This is arithmetic, not a recommended amount to use.
Dots and strength names belong to the manufacturer's scale. They do not replace a figure with a clear unit.
Format and package size are separate

Mini, slim and regular describe formats. Exact dimensions and weights vary. A small pouch can contain more nicotine than a larger one if its concentration is higher.
Pouch count states the number of portions. Net weight states the amount of product. Neither is itself a nicotine amount.
Does tobacco free mean harmless?
No. Nicotine is addictive. The BfR assessment identifies health risks from nicotine exposure and limited evidence about long-term use of nicotine pouches.
Consumer nicotine pouches should not be confused with approved nicotine medicines. Healthcare services can explain treatment options for people who want to stop using tobacco or nicotine.
Common questions
Do nicotine pouches contain tobacco?
They do not contain tobacco leaves. Check the formal category when “snus” is used loosely.
Are white portion and nicotine pouches the same?
No. White portion can contain tobacco; the name may describe the outside of the pouch.
Are products identical in every country?
Do not assume so. Names, warnings, formats and variants can differ. Check the package for the relevant market.
