Mg per pouch states the nicotine amount in one pouch. Mg/g states the nicotine amount in one gram of filling. A number without its unit is incomplete.

Converting mg/g into mg per pouch

A single pouch resting on the lid of a closed unbranded can.
Mg per pouch refers to one pouch. Mg/g refers to one gram of filling.

Mg per pouch = mg/g × filling weight per pouch in grams.

If the filling weight is not stated directly, it may be possible to calculate an average from the net filling weight and pouch count. First confirm that the net weight refers to the filling.

  1. A container has 14 g of filling across 20 pouches.
  2. 14 ÷ 20 = 0.7 g per pouch.
  3. The concentration is 16 mg/g.
  4. 16 × 0.7 = 11.2 mg per pouch.

This is a mathematical example, not a product specification or recommended strength. Prefer the manufacturer's stated amount per pouch when available. Do not include the container or packaging weight.

Same concentration, different amount

ExampleFilling weightCalculated amount at 12 mg/g
A0.5 g6 mg per pouch
B0.8 g9.6 mg per pouch

The concentration is identical, but the larger filling contains more nicotine.

Dots and strength names

ZYN Citrus, VELO Lime Flame and XQS Cactus Sour with strength dots on the lids.
Dots and strength names are each brand's own scale.

Dots, bars and terms such as “regular” or “extra strong” belong to individual brand scales. Four dots on one container need not mean the same amount as four on another.

You cannot directly compare 20 mg/g with 15 mg per pouch without knowing the first product's filling weight.

Content is different from absorption

The printed amount does not state exactly how much a person absorbs. The BfR risk assessment describes differences in nicotine release and absorption. Formulation and conditions of use matter too.

A calculation explains a label. It cannot predict a person's absorbed dose or show that two products have identical effects.

Common reading errors

  • Copying a figure without its unit.
  • Mistaking net weight for total nicotine.
  • Assuming all slim pouches weigh the same.
  • Using another country's variant without checking.
  • Presenting a rounded calculation as a manufacturer's measured value.

Common questions

Can total nicotine be divided by pouch count?

Yes, if the manufacturer explicitly gives total nicotine for the whole container. Do not confuse that with net weight.

Does mini mean less nicotine?

No. Mini describes format; check the stated amount separately.
